I like the idea of knowing how to adorn yourself, and I think we can see how people who have to be in positions of influence need to adorn and conduct themselves. The nails thing—I’ll probably never “nail” that because I don’t care enough.

But may I say, my thought process is—why be a princess, when you were born to be a queen? Because I’ve had to step up, which is why Princess Bride enrages me. I was just like, for the sake of fuck, Buttercup. Fight back! My favorite princess are the ones who know how to be regal in her life but who has a sharp instinct and wit and a passion for helping and serving out of love. I grew up roughhousing with boys—my brother, his friends, and I’m glad I learned how to climb trees and run and hide and fight. They gave me just enough of that bloodlust in case I needed it.

My favorite princess was Sailor Moon. She wore her emotions on her sleeve—same, made mistakes, showed up, owned her feelings, spoke her feelings, and looked hot while doing it. My friends are like me—fiercely loving, mothers, smart, intuitive, and capable of kicking ass it we have to get down to brass tacts.

But I will say that I love the sentiment and I love the specificity for embracing traditional femininity. I say we look to nature—how does she adorn herself? Her beauty is natural and it shines through. She doesn’t need a disguise, it to be sure, she beautifies the world, just as women do.

And as for the archetypals of princess / queen—I think some women were made to have to be tough. To have to be able to rule in absence of a king. My friends who are passionate little love warriors like me have also had to endure single motherhood. I feel like if there are princesses and queens among us, the ones who have suffered the consequences of life in hurtful ways are here to enable the princesses to be that which they deserve and desire if that’s what they wish.

KM Weiland’s book on Archetypes is a gem for writers and it helped inform me on both character but also my own journey. 👸 💅 😉

Yes to all of this!! Thank you so much for sharing this. 👸 I also loved princesses who had that sharp wit. Sailor Moon was incredible! And thanks for the book recommendation, I'm going to get it! I've been wanting to learn more about character arcs and would be super cool to learn more about these princess/queen archetypes.

Thank you for being so gracious about where I’m coming from. 🙏 You will LOVE KM Weiland. She is a gem. Her books on outlining, structure, and character arcs have all been real assets to me. I read the archetype book in 2023 on a trip to Topanga 💛 for a wonderful women’s-only luncheon for Tara Schuster’s Glow in the F—king Dark. Which is something I’d love to create here—women meeting others and sharing stories and support and building community. I love that I have people I call friends in California now. It’s beautiful, what art does to bring us together.

If you get the book and read it, feel free to message me. I’m also a developmental editor and I love talking craft. I’m transferring my blog content from the website I had that I destroyed onto my website and my editing for authors Substack. Which is sorely neglected. Timing is everything though. Like grand entrances, am I right? 👑
