Happy to share that I took the "have a stack of books by your bed" advice and it worked! I've been reading before bed more often and giving myself grace when I don't!
I'm a daily reader and have actually been thinking about how to read LESS because I do it at the expense of other things I should/could be doing, like making art or sewing something, or cooking something delicious, etc :) Audiobooks do help, in that regard, but still... sometimes I think I need to have more empty brain time.
I am putting that Santa Fe book on my list! We had the best time when we road tripped out west with our kids a couple of years ago. Favorite places in New Mexico included: Ten Thousand Waves, staying at Taos Goji Farm, Farmhouse Cafe and Bakery, visiting the Taos Farmers Market, visiting an Earthship (would love to stay in one next time), Dolina Bakery and Cafe, Taos Taproom, Cafe Pasqual's.
Hahah that's so true too!!! Whenever I'm in phases where I'm not reading as much, I direct a lot of that time and energy to other things. I think that's also the beauty of reading, it's so flexible to our rituals. And sometimes you do just need empty brain time. We could all use a break from reading/consuming/listening from time to time.
Also thank you for these spots!! A road trip out west sounds so dreamy. Adding all of these to my list.
Ooo I definitely want to get the New Mexico book! I just went in July and I fell in love with the state. It’s so incredible!! I really loved Taos. I actually found a great rec list from Jess on her Mundo de Menda substack.
Okay I'm finally coming back to this because I finished Empire of the Elite today!!
They're both SOO good, but I think if you want an overview of the entire Condé Nast space, I recommend Empire of the Elite. It's so informative, fascinating, and has quotes from lots of different notable people.
When the Going was Good is incredible too but because it's a memoir, it's just Graydon's POV. Loved seeing the space from his POV, so I think it depends if you want the memoir lens, or a zoomed out look!
I also thought that they were maybe going to be repetitive, but I learned new things from both of them.
Ooh yeah, even when I have multiple books, I do still have one "main" book I'm reading that takes up more of my time and attention. For example, yesterday I read a couple of pages in the morning from the non-fiction media book, but in the afternoon, I read Frankenstein for a longer period of time. I like having the flexibility, but I also think everyone has different reading styles!! So this is just what happens to work with me.
I love this so much, Sandy! Toggling between books based on mood is genius. Also, I watched Blue Moon last week and adored it!! I can't wait to hear what you think 🥰

If you could only read one: Empire of the Elite or When the Going was Good, which would it be?

I’m curious about having multiple books going at once as a non-negotiable. For me, it’s the opposite, I struggle to stick to one book!
